Divas Gets August Award From Tom Cross

The Shorewood salon and spa was honored in part for its work helping cancer and hospice patients

Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, and his Ovation to Business Advisory Committee awarded August’s Ovation to Business honors to Divas Salon & Spa.

The salon and spa has not only been in business for more than a decade in Shorewood, it has also been serving the community in very special ways.

“In addition to their regular business and services, not many people may know that the owners and staff at Divas go above and beyond to serve clients who are struggling with diseases like cancer or serving hospice patients in their homes,” said Cross. “That shows remarkable character and sense of community and we are pleased to present them with the Ovation to Business award today.”

Plainfield rejoices as long-time work on Route 59 ends

By Bob Okon

PLAINFIELD — One regional traffic nightmare is over.

Three years in the making, the Route 59 reconstruction project is for all practical purposes done. Plainfield, where the work has lasted the longest, celebrated Friday with a Route 59 ribbon-cutting.

“Right now, Plainfield is open,” Mayor Michael Collins announced at the event. “We’re ready for business.”

All lanes are open now, although there still can be occasional closures in the coming two months as work crews do final work on sidewalks and landscaping.

State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, remembered bringing state transportation officials to Route 59 at least 12 years ago to show what needed to be done. It was a reminder that Route 59 traffic was a mess before the reconstruction started.

“I said, ‘You’ve got to see how congested this is,’” Cross said, reflecting on past visits from state officials as he pushed for the road widening. “But this (reconstruction) will do what it is supposed to do. It’s good for the whole region.”

The Bugle: Storm Sewers carry flood troubles from Sunnyland

Storm sewers carry flood troubles from Sunnyland

By Sherri Dauskurdas Staff

A series of recent storms left thousands of residents under water and without power in July. But with any luck, one Joliet area neighborhood will soon be keeping their heads, and homes above water, thanks to a grant from the federal government.

Sunnyland Sanitary District is the recipient of a $750,000 grant to install storm sewers and rehabilitate ditches in the Sunnyland Subdivision in Plainfield Township. The $750,000 grant is made possible through the federal government’s “IKE” Disaster Recovery Program.

A host of local residents, state officials, Will County officials and politicians worked on the project with agencies such as the Will County Stormwater Management Planning Committee as well as the Sunnyland Sanitary District to apply for and secure the grant.

“This is a wonderful example of identifying a need-and working with the federal government, state and local governments to achieve a common goal,” said Rep. Tom Cross, who worked with Hadamik and others to secure the funds for the Sunnyland project . “This area has been plagued with flooding issues – these efforts will provide relief and piece of mind to area residents when it rains.”

Joliet Herald Pulse: Team work is key to Route 59 Success

Pulse: Team work is key to Route 59 success

State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, didn’t mention names but did allude to politicians not being able to work together “in this country and in this state” when speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reconstructed section of Route 59 in Plainfield.

Aside from the state’s own budget woes, the debt-ceiling crisis in Washington seemed to be getting worse by the minute at the time that state, county and village officials were celebrating the near-completion of the $89 million project that widened and improved seven miles of road through Plainfield, Joliet and Shorewood and created a new interchange at Interstate 55.

“Projects like this don’t happen unless everybody comes together,” Cross told the audience. “This is an example of people working together — not fighting — to get something done.”
